Oral history interview with Hilda Asia, Dec. 1, 1986.

Asia discusses her early life and education. She moved to Seattle in 1946 and joined Hadassah women's group. She also joined Temple Beth Am and became active in the Jewish Education Committee. Asia describes her work in improving Jewish education awareness and the Jewish High School. She tells of confrontations between the Jewish Education Committee and the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and their separation. She also mentions that the committee initiated the idea of a Jewish museum, which was not developed. Asia relates that she joined the board of the American Jewish Committee and worked to raise its interest in Jewish community affairs. She tells how the idea of a Jewish book store -- Books Mercaz -- as a community meeting place evolved. Asia states that the AJC raised money for the venture and that the National Council of Jewish Women became involved. She discusses the fluctuation in the plans and why Books Mercaz failed. Asia describes her and her husband's involvement in developing the Metropolitan Day School.
